Day 74 - Galapagos bound!

Fat little warbler.
Inspired by a trip made by my advisor a couple years ago, and now that I am an official biologist, we decided that I had to make the pilgrimage to the Galapagos as well.  (Buddy was inspired by his sister's elementary school project from many many years ago.)

We took an EARLY flight from Quito to Baltra island, a former American military base in the Galapagos.  As the plane landed, we saw our first bird: an egret.  From the ferry to Santa Cruz Island, we saw blue-footed boobies and frigates flying around.  On the taxi to Puerto Ayora (our base for the next couple of days) we saw a number of finches and warblers flying across the road.
First marine iguana of many.
Attack of the Opuntia!

Buddy and the Opuntia become friends.
We checked into our hotel and then went to forage for food in town.  At the bank we encountered marine iguanas and Sally Lightfoot crabs.

Stopped for supplies at the Post Office and Supermarket before heading to the dive shop we were going to dive with the next day, Scuba Iguana.  From Scuba Iguana, we took the short walk to the Darwin Research Station where we came face to face with yellow warblers, land iguanas, and giant tortoises!  As you can tell, our first biological encounters on the islands did not disappoint!
Giant!
